Edwin D. Cogan went to St. Ignatius Prep School in Chicago, Illinois. From there, he went onto Xavier University in Cincinnati Ohio, where he majored in history and minored in philosophy. Ed played football for four years and started as a linebacker for two seasons.Upon graduation, he opened a public harness racing stable. He spent the winter months training and racing at Pompano Park Racetrack in Florida and raced primarily in the Chicago area during the summer months. In 1981, he was elected to the Blue Book of Harness Racing, which consisted of the top 5% of all harness drivers, trainers, and breeders in North America. From there, Ed tackled the commodities business. He purchased seats at the Mid America Commodity Exchange and the International Monetary Market of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. He was an active floor trader at the "Merc” for twelve years. In 2004 he was elected President and Chief Executive Officer of LaGrange Country Club where he served on their board for 8 years. He also served on the board of the Way Back Inn, for 7 years, an institution devoted to alcohol and drug rehabiliation, and was president from 2002-2003.
